I think it's just a filter for the oil the falls back into the pan.

Another really interesting video 👍 I think it's a common assumption when doing engines like this that any variances from the service manual are mistakes in the manual but I reckon a lot of the time, people get inside engines like this and either don't take the proper care to do things properly/just don't care, or just don't the importance of doing things correctly.
