I'm not sure I can agree that Joe seems to empathize with people living in poverty and homelessness. The points he's making seem to run a lot more in a eugenics direction to me. Less "we need to get rid of poverty" and more "we need to get rid of the poor"

Another important thing about social safety nets and/or UBI is that it provides workers leverage to demand more from employers, as it mitigates the threat of homelessness, food insecurity, etc. Right-wingers love to say "don't like where you work, go get a better job" and just assume everyone has the means for upward mobility, but when you actually suggest something that would give people those means right-wingers whinge that it's socialism.
