E was a delight, full of good stories and easy conversation, and Mikala Davis and her band were fantastic. That song is still whirling around in my head.
I really dropped the ball when it came to Recc Center. So here's some stuff I'm consuming and enjoying lately.
For baseball fans, "Charlie Hustle and The Matter of Pete Rose" is a four part documentary on HBO following the highs and lows of one of Baseball's most legendary and notorious players: Pete Rose. I great up a Phillies fan right at the peak of Pete and remember distinctly crossing out the record he broke in my copy of the Guinness Book of World Records back in the mid 80s. He's certainly one of the best to ever play the game, but he's also a complicated, flawed and perhaps even BAD guy, who of course bet on baseball and was banned from the game for life. He sits down for the documentary and does his best to make his case, but you never quite believe anything he says. Still, after all of it I probably lean towards allowing him in the baseball hall of fame, after all, it's just a museum and it wouldn't be hard to acknowledge the records he set, while adding the context of his banishment. Isn't that what museums should be? A place to get the full picture?
Speaking of baseball, I'm a fan of the youtube channel Jomboy Media This dude breaks down funny or interesting moments of the game by doing a lot of lip reading and zooming in. It's usually really funny and a great insight into the game.
The latest entry into the Planet of The Apes movie just landed on Hulu and I took the afternoon off yesterday to laze on the couch and take it in. The Kingdom of The Planet of The Apes (sloppy title!) is a fine entry into one of the only big budget Hollywood franchises I actually enjoy. I really love Dawn of the Planet of The Apes - The CGI work on the apes is almost impossible to believe, Gary Oldman is wonderful, and it has a political edge to it, subtle but definitely there as it ponders what's an indigenous people to do when facing the existential threat? It's a zero sum game between the human race, who are on the ropes as a civilization and the apes who just wanna be left alone.
I'm doing the audio book for Black Pill by Elle Reeve, Vice reporter who deep dived in the alt right, 8Chan, meme wars of the twenty-teens (is that what we're calling that decade?) Recommended by one of you, so thanks!
It's well written, harrowing, personal, sad and scary, culminating in the Charlottesville Unite The Right rally. As someone who was right in the middle of that messy explosion of online hate, irony and nihilism it felt deeply personal for me.
I never watched The Leftovers when it aired but over the years had heard great things about it, so me and Marilyn are giving it a whirl. I hear it's a slow burn but gets great and it didn't run for too long so it's not a huge commitment. Will report back if it's in fact GREAT.
We watched a good amount of Olympics, mostly the women's gymnastics which was quite moving at times. Pretty wholesome stuff!

Leftovers is definitely a slow burn, I almost bailed on it twice during the first season. Not because it wasn't interesting but because I kept thinking what is the point of any of this?? It takes its sweet time to really get a coherent plot going imo. Ironically, "what is the point of any of this" is kind of a theme of the show. Really loved it in the end, one of my favorites.

I’m 3 days late to this thread, but Gary Oldman wasn’t in the new Apes movie. Sounds like you watched Dawn… The new one is “Kingdom” and it’s a different director. We started watching it last night and the story and writing is not as good as that trilogy IMO, but some outstanding motion capture and CG for the apes.

Been following Jomboy since the astros cheating scandal essentially rocketed him to fame. If you haven't seen his "weekly dumb" show with Jake, it's a fun short watch, (youtube) which happens to feature lots of other dumb stuff outside of sports. Their editing is great - I see a fair bit of Awesome Show in their style. He and Jake would make great guests I think but from what I understand they're pretty damned busy but worth a try! Both seem like genuinely good, kind hearted people.

Third season of leftovers is bonkers in the best way. Love the new live Bill Callahan Rosali - Bite Down (you guys should have her and her band on) New Sturgill Simpson as Johnny Blueskies is great as well. He would be another great guest. Loved Longlegs but definitely not for everyone. And Twisters was a big dumb July movie that was a fun watch. Am I crazy or are special effects getting worse? Feel like the original from the 90s looked way more realistic.

(+3 or 4 others that I'm forgetting - Bamford!) are ahead of the rest of the planet. Not to mention wonka & dune's Chalomet (he's a quadruple+ threat like Tim, so it feels like cheating, what a Wonka, though! jk)

Pete Rose has a great signature. I was an extra in a Leftovers scene (1st/only time, fun tho) and never went back to find out if it was good. Really happy to hear that it's good. Rec - Oasis: Supersonic. Saw it in IMAX a couple weeks ago. Unbelievable. Its from 2016. One of the best music documentaries ever. Can’t stop listening to Oasis now. Was only familiar with the hits. Live at Knebworth album is great also. Still have to watch that performance, its on Youtube in full.

Very jealous of you for watching Leftovers for the first time. A truly original show with some incredible writing and acting (Carrie Coon ❤️) We just finished Presumed Innocent on Apple+. Lots of star power and a decent plot. Worth a watch. I know you have already seen it, but watched Monkey Man on Peacock and highly recommend. Great action scenes set against a backdrop of a Modi-type Indian government.

Just finished the book Quantum Criminals by Alex Pappademas. It's great and will throw you into a Steely Dan hole that's even deeper than the Joel Hole. Fiction: I really enjoyed Dead Boy Detectives on Netflix without having read the comics. I’ve always loved buddy-cop-whodunit mysteries, and this adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s work has such a fun supernatural flair. Add a healthy approach to unrequited love, best friends from beyond the grave, and one of the most enjoyable female antagonists I’ve seen on screen (I’m biased since I love mildly insane yet charismatic characters), and it’s a fun 8 eps (with a good dose of horror. Mr. Dante would probably approve of the Hell vibes. And that Guillermo del Toro-esque body horror in the attic was 👌 ). Also great to whet your appetite for the upcoming season 2 of the main story, The Sandman! Nonfiction: I’ve been working on improving my active listening and the book “Active Listening Techniques: 30 Practical Tools to Hone Your Communication Skills” by Nixaly Leonardo LCSW I found conducive to meaningful self-reflection. It touches the surface on a few things that I think could be better unpacked with professional help (i.e. one must learn to self-regulate emotions to keep calm during a conversation…easier said than done alone, I’m sure) but so far seems thorough in approaching the big picture of having deeper conversations. An easy fix: Instead of using close-ended questions, I now use more open-ended questions and learn a lot more from people. Good stuff. Music: I’ve enjoyed Roosevelt’s new singles. “Automatic” is funky-chill in a disco way, and “In the Dark”, out a few days ago, is rich with that bass while still melting in synth. This week he’ll be playing in LA on OHL day–people gotta check him out! I love his KEXP performances with his live band on Youtube.

Sounds like good summer media consumption. My rec is this new doc on YouTube, All That Is Sacred. Cool little glimpse of the early 70s Key West arts scene, specifically about Jimmy Buffet and a couple of writer friends, a little about the writing and filming of a supposed cult-classic fishing doc, Tarpon. Talks to Buffet and a couple other people recently who all appreciatively reflect on the meaning and importance of having a creative community. It’s touching.

I thought The Leftovers was fantastic. I've been listening to the guy who did the soundtrack (Max Richter) since the early 2000s and can remember thinking "Damn. Such powerful and emotive stuff. Would be incredible if he was composing for film." ... Well. That dream came true. Dude is *everywhere* now. Max Richter is also a bit of a Doug dopp, so that's always a bonus.

I recently picked up a cheap, used copy of a book about Keith Moon called Full Moon, written by Dougal Butler. Butler was Moon's touring companion for the last decade of Moon's life and these are the years the book focuses on, so it jumps right into the good stuff. I only mention this because I had happened to see Tim's appearance on David Cross's podcast a day or two before finding this book, which put Rock n Roll Gary a little bit more at the forefront of my mind than usual, making it impossible to read this book and not hear it in RnRG's voice. It's all here, the cockney slang, the general cheekiness, and of course, the callous dismissal of genuinely disturbing behavior. Though it seems unlikely that anyone is going to bother turning this into an audiobook, hearing Tim read this in character as Rock n Roll Gary would be amazing.

I flew through a fictional Cold War thriller from Frederick Forsyth, The Devil's Alternative. It's one of the most thrilling books I've ever read that has a clear desire line and philosophy driving each character's actions so that when something momentous happens it knocks you out of your chair with its impact, right to the final twist that had me screaming in disbelief and delight. I've ordered a bunch of other Forsyth books as a result (from Better World Books - I avoid supporting Jeff Bozo where possible).

I saw a new documentary about the band Negativland last night, called Stand By for Failure, that really made me think of office hours. These guys basically invented the drop concert in the early 80s — maybe you guys already know this, but the similarity is striking. I know you’re a fan of Shelby Foote’s Civil War volumes (the combo of Foote being narrated by the GOAT Grover Gardner…GOATner Gardner?) But newer book Demon of Unrest by Larson is incredible. It really challenges a lot of assumptions I think we all had about the lead up to the war. It’s a real nail-biter as the seconds click down to the shelling of Sumter.

I have a couple things!! -The Knick is one of my favorite TV shows of all time, Steven Soderbergh is amazing, all the lighting is period-accurate and it looks incredible -Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry is just a great read and is sort of a comfort book for me, I read it whenever I'm going through something. That and East of Eden are probably my top 2 favorite books.

Season 1 of The Leftovers is pretty good; you just gotta get through the first 4-5 episodes to get over the hump. Seasons 2-3 are one of the great runs ever in TV and cemented it as my favorite show. Plus, my favorite TV episode of any show ever is season 2, episode 9: International Assassin. Enjoy the ride!

Ah damn. Black Pill sounds great but doesn’t seem to be available on Audible in the UK. Book wise, I’m listening to Jannette McCurdy’s memoir and it’s truly brilliant. Written so beautifully, touching and funny as hell. I was recommended it a lot and I’m sure you have been at some point too. I’m reading a physical book called The Only Plane In The Sky which is an oral history of the 9/11 terror attacks and bloody hell… what a read. I’ve never nearly passed out reading a book before. I can’t put it down!
