Thanks, friend! What a weirdly hypnotic vibe.

Been listening to “money that matters” a lot since since this came episode. Is there a quintessential Randy Newman album or 2 to start with?

I would love it if Tim and Will got together and developed a show similar to MadTv
Jared
Chad’s podcast is really interesting, I rec it.
Dan
Totally agree, spring/eden/laughing is such a great run

‘Cost too much for its returns’ that is the case now…..but major companies are dumping billions into making it better, it’s a long term investment that will *probably* bring about improvements and major returns. (Many new tech ideas, programs, and companies lost money for 5-10 years before they started making money). ‘Well it’s here’ is not nonsense baby logic. (Kind of harsh word choices for me an expressing an opinion that is well informed) AI/LLMs are an extremely hot commodity of big tech that pretty much everybody with a lot of money is invested in for the long term. You are betting on a catastrophic investment failure. I would hope that it fails in the ways you are saying, but a lot of people are working on the problems with it, and big tech’s claws are dug into it deep. It doesn’t matter if Altman et al. are selling a lie; lies sell all the time until they become the truth. It’s messed up, but it’s a reality of the system we’re under. The world didn’t need google, amazon, smartphones, computers, etc, but the market has convinced people they need all of it on a personal level and for work. Another example: Private health insurance companies are built on the lie that they are necessary for delivering healthcare, and look how much they make. Individual workers face the dilemma of taking an ethical stance of abstaining from using the tools vs learning to use them in case they become industry standard to use. You seem to be framing it as a pure individual ethical choice when there are impure capital incentives and realities that individuals are forced into considering. The safer bet is the latter as a worker, because if you learn to use this stuff and it all ends up being ‘mush’ then no harm, no foul, but if you refuse to get on board, you run the risk of being behind the field of employees your competing against for jobs. Hope none of my points come off as combative. My first comment was in response to a person that called Chad a ‘loser’ for having an opinion that I believe is well informed and ‘realistic’ (real in the day-to-day experience in a capitalist system, not realistic in the pure sense) to the situation. Then you turned around and deemed my similar opinion ‘baby logic.’ I’ve thought about this stuff a good deal (English teacher, so I know AI sucks at writing, but I am virtually forced to reckon with AI), and it’s interesting and complex to think about. I’m all ears if you want to further articulate your stance, because that’s all I was trying to do, not be combative.

@Des Except the idea that AI is "here to stay" and "only going to get better" is bullshit PR, an actual lie being sold by Sam Altman et al. AI is *not* getting better, it's being trained into mush and costs far too much processing power for its returns. That line is a weak copout by Chad to wash his hands of the whole thing. He has a choice whether or not to use it, "well, it's here" is nonsense baby logic.
turbinity
Yeah the self-description of their podcast at the top about if Dudesy was "real" was cringey copout bullshit, hard to listen to

i've been on another talk talk tear lately too. the colour of spring is where it's at for me - i think people often overlook it thinking it's just more of the big poppy sound of their first two albums - but a lot of what makes spirit of eden/laughing stock special is already there. perfect string of albums

This weeks break video montage was an absolute stunner. Thank you Vic. Also, I think in the context Doug’s first “problematic” drop was appropriate. But he pushed his luck with the second and Tim’s intervention was fair. If it was just the first drop, and same intervention, I’d claim overkill. Anywho, all timer show. Big belly laughs.

And “efficiency” is not built into it. Even at a profit standpoint it won’t be profitable due to the inefficiency (energy use). In order for it to be energy efficient for improved performance, a whole new power grid would have to be built (not happening). Don’t take it from me, Goldman Sachs and other of the biggest banks have said this (not interested in investment). In terms of the tech prowess, engineers have said it’s shit. The hype around it seems largely forced by new venture capital desperate for new investments (new profits, because the rate of profit is falling). Thank you for my (materialist) TED talk.
Des L
@Christian How was it ‘very off?’…..his angle was basically that it isn’t going anywhere, it’s only going to get better, so we might as well jump on board; there is also the fact that it gives people more resource access than they may be able to get otherwise (like word processors in lieu of paper and pencil; digital instrument plug-ins instead of buying a bunch of instruments). When and if AI becomes completely autonomous there will be bigger problems to worry about than the human purity of art, but before then, it still requires human prompts, so it is virtually just a tool to streamline tasks (y’know, like calculators).
Des L
Sasso’s Randy Newman made me cry laughing. Lock him up!

I like that Doug got to be the youngest guy in the room and T didn't blow it! The era of virulent ageism is finally behind us
avj
As a staunchly anti-AI guy and a musician / recording guy, I expected to hear the same old nonsense -- but I dug the hell out of what he had to say. I think an open discussion about what constitutes purity of art, especially in the realm of music and music production, is fascinating.
Miguel
Will wit the De La reference!! lmao he right too
Tim Heidecker
All good friend. Appreciate the patreon support ☮️❤️
Evan Strippelhoff
The shorts HAVE to be a part of the JD Vance character hahaha

Egg Salad Situation is the name of my jam band

Happy birthday Vic!!! Great ep thank you all. Unfortunately I must debate with Doug about Skywalkers. That was a real bloated and manipulative doc with a lot of shady NFT promotion.
Kris macfalda
The A.I. love-fest was really painful to hear.
Christian Aspen
Sorry Captain, I guess loser is a bit hack and Trump-ish. Controversy creates conversation, but it was a little frustrating to hear him cope for that long about how the bachelor country album was just as valid as human art. Again some fair points, but the Ai debate is getting real stale and his angle seemed very off. Peace and love to you tho Matt, not a knock on the booking
Tim Heidecker
Never got into the solo stuff. Just really connected with that one.
Tim Heidecker
You might disagree with his opinions but not really accurate or fair to call him a loser. Do you really want every guest to agree on everything? Sounds like a boring show to me. -Matt
Melissa
Plus it's destroying the planet

an entirely unprompted thought but i miss weird al pacino
FerntFernt
Tim and Will would be such a good combo, I hope they get to work on something together in the future.
Faux Vernon
Tremendous.

Great episode!! I had only seen bits of Will Sasso here and there, but this podcast made me a huge fan for sure. Definitely going to check out the Stooges movies because I didn’t give it much thought when it first came out. And Happy Birthday VBIII!
Christian
Will Sasso you are a treasure.
Mig
tremendous show, many people are saying this
Sam B
rude
Christian Aspen
Sasso was great but that chad guy was a loser
Joe Cardina
made it 30 mins in before realizing Tim and Will were wearing almost the same shirt
Kyle Millikan
I had a negative view of Sasso going in (madTV mostly) but he was great and this ep was top notch. A great bonus was Doug laughing very hard
aurahack
i have never heard of the super ai-pilled guy and hope i never do again but sasso was a riot to have on
Dan
Spirit of Eden is an all timer record. Do you like Hollis' solo record, capt?
Oopie Doopie
Awesome ep. Second hour was non-stop laughs.
SpongeBob Marley
Tim you should shave your head
Robert G. Hill
I love all the good folks involved here- thanks as always for high quality weirdness and assured laughter! Also: is there any info on the very strange first music video we saw during the break? Who were those masked performers?
marshy
great episode boys, peace & love

Proud of you for sticking with The Leftovers, T. We wouldn't steer you wrong. It does take 4 or 5 of episodes to dial in, but once you're in ... You're in.
Blake Buesnel
all-timer

Happy belated bday Vic and peace&love to all the other AI-pilled Saputo-maxxers out there
Bus Crush
Yes an all timer! Teared up laughing
Ashley D. M.
I was impressed by Sasso. I knew he was good, but I didn't know how deep his Three Stooges knowledge went. I will have to give that Farley Stooges film another glance.
Jim D.
Big laughs. That Jesse Ventura!!
Slinky Meander
I hope with all this impression of Suno, I hope you try out Udio.
Old James
This was a good one!
Ben Posey
that trump impression is spot on! also the ventura Wrestler! nice!
Dylan Murray
I love this show. But I want to make it clear AI will never be art. it's ai generated content but it actively devalues the human experience. ai bros - and they are largely bros- feel emotionally malnourished and bitter failed artists to me. AI is not the advent of photography but more like another lethal form of gasoline.
Melissa
I am now Will Sasso's #1 fan
Athena
This episode really was magic! Theres a line one contestant says in Dropdg during her talent act "the year, 2024, planet, Earth, the question on everyones mind, what is soylent green" also love Tim's makeup and happy Birthday Vic!
