Greetings From Albuquerque

That's right folks, Tim the Actor is back on the road. This time, it's a movie called GOAT, with Marlon Wayans - a psychological horror-thriller/football movie from Jordan Peel's production company. It's a small, but key role. Hey, I'm number 5 on the call sheet! I got in on Wednesday but haven't done a lick of work except show up for a few costume fittings.
But I had a fun trip down here! I showed up at the Burbank airport and immediately spotted legendary session bass player Leland Sklar checking in. I gave him his privacy until we both made it through security and I told him I was a fan and we chatted for a few minutes. Nice guy and I got a selfie! This dude played on some of my favorite songs of all time! Naturally, we didn't discuss how we used one of his Facebook Live streams as a phony interview. That would have been awkward.
I sat by my gate, looking forward to a little quiet time when I spotted Marc Maron approaching. He spotted me and we were both like "oh boy here we go." He was heading to Albuquerque (red squiggly line) too and so he sat with me at the gate and we chatted it up, which continued all the way from the gate to our seats on the plane until we touched down in New Mexico.
A petite older lady made her way into our aisle forcing Marc into the middle seat (he's a generous man!) and we got to talking to her. She was an interesting lady, and told us she had just recently won the US Open in Ping Pong! She didn't know who either of us were, as she proudly proclaimed she didn't have a TV and didn't watch movies. She was too busy painting, teaching karate and playing ping pong. She was one of those desert people, living in nature up in Santa Fe.
Marc and I parted ways as we exited and made loose plans to meet up this weekend. I think I'll go get dinner or something with him today. He's an Albuquerque native and is here for personal stuff.
At the bag claim, Ping Pong lady gave me her card, which featured her incredibly photo-realistic paintings of wildlife, and invited me up to see her. We'll see how the week goes, but maybe I'll drive on up and pay her a visit and get a ping pong lesson. Or a karate lesson!
Since then it's been pretty quiet. I settled into my very nice hotel, picked up some provisions from Whole Foods, took in the pool, burned through Baby Reindeer (holy shit!) and hit the treadmill, hit some local food reccs... worked on my lines.
Last night, after another fitting, I hit the hotel bar for a nightcap and sat next to an older man having dinner alone. He politely said, "Would you be interested in a little conversation?"
Sure!
He told me he was a state judge who had just come back from Los Alamos where there was a conference about nuclear weapons, a mock trial of some kind that I didn't really understand but he was an expert in scientific evidence and how it's used in court. I was excited, having just read Nuclear War: A Scenario, and got to talking about all of it. He asked what I was doing there and that led into a nice long friendly conversation about my work and family and his life in law and the hours passed until last call. I told him he should watch The Electric Sun Trial, as I think we really nailed the courtroom experience and he seemed eager to check it out. As the bar closed up, we exchanged numbers. Hey, you never know when you may need a Judge's phone number in New Mexico.
My advice? Talk to strangers! It can be fun!
Looking forward to seeing what Brendan and Amanda do to the place on Thursday. Should be a wild one, and if I'm not shooting, I'll try and call in.

Love it- engaging in convo with strangers really can be fun. It can be not so fun too which I feel can deter us much of the time. Still, in the end worth it to learn something and empathize

This is a great story Tim. I make it a point to talk with people, any people, wherever I go, if it looks like they might be into it. As a result, I've met all kinds of Cool, Regular People. The last person I talked with was a young woman from Africa who was here for studies. It was a load of fun, and I feel like the exchange enriched my life. I felt like I was a participant in my community, instead of a bystander. I highly recommend talking with others!!

Nice story Tim. I’m wondering if interacting with strangers is becoming a lost art…maybe smart phones or we’re just so wrapped up in our lives. Goes back to basic ideas like listening and giving people agency by asking their name and how they are doing. I’m not saying stop everyone on the street or grocery store but in the right moment it’s nice and can lead to a real connection.

What the judge was probably thinking to himself while exchanging numbers with you: Hey, you may never know when you need an artist/actor/comedian/singer-songwriter in Glendale. What a cool coincidence you and Marc got to have such a long chat! I really enjoy living vicariously through you since I'm not a charming extrovert. Thanks for sharing. of course, I'm chomping at the bit about all the nuggets you shared about the movie. That genre (not football) is one of my favorites. I'll be sad if the movie doesn't tackle 😏 the abusive power dynamics that exist in the exploitative parts of the sports industry heightened by the experience of living as a minority. Extra sad if you don't get to use your Big Voice (and Big Hair). Happy acting to ya!

I highly recommend checking out Bow and Arrow Brewing in ABQ. One of the only Indigenous owned, and fully woman owned breweries in the country. https://www.bowandarrowbrewing.com I do all their design work. They have a nice outdoor space and good food carts too.

Love ABQ! Tim, if you're craving some outside time may I suggest a short trip to Petroglyph National Monument on the west side of town. Amazing Native American petroglyphs hundreds (possibly thousands) of years old, alongside rock-hewn signatures of early Spanish conquistadores. Very cool spot, worth an hour of your time!

Enjoy your time in ABQ! Nice time of year to visit. I'd recommend taking a walk in the bosque along the river (Rio Grande Nature Center state park or Alameda Trailhead are nice spots), or on the trails in the Sandia foothills on the east side of town (Elena Gallegos area has great views). And maybe grab a bahn mi and avocado smoothie at Coda Bakery. Oh, and make sure to eat breakfast burritos at every opportunity.
