Happy Monday everyone! I'm happy to report I'm alive and well after last night's Oscar Special!
It was late last summer that, Eric, Gregg, Katie, and I met at Eric Idle's house (where Katie and her sister Annie housesit) to start talking about season 14 and Oscar Special 11. With the strike still in effect we were unsure when we could get started but we talked about the potential for getting the show back up on the air at the beginning of the year and running it right into the Oscar Special. That presented a great opportunity to write the season with the Oscar Special acting as a season finale. Eventually, we landed on the idea of a business convention, heavily inspired by PDB and this other psycho Grand Cardone. It felt like a fertile, new but not unfamiliar playground for our world.
It felt good to have a unique, clearly defined concept for what the Oscar Special was going to look like and feel like but we still had to figure out what exactly would happen over the course of the night, how it would tie together all the various storylines and why the hell would Gregg even be there!?
We had a pretty basic outline started by the end of the year, but lots of open questions to answer. In the new year we'd meet on weekends. Eric was now back on full-time tv show writer's room duties, Gregg was on the road, and I was in Ohio or Toronto or wherever else acting... but we found time to meet either in person or remotely to talk through it... and talk through it.... and talk through it...
We also had to figure out how to shoot this the right way - it felt impossible to recreate the look of a convention center on a sound stage so we went scouting at hotels to see if it was possible to just do it that way. We really lucked out on our first scout and met with a very accommodating man named VEGAN (!) who really wanted our business and made it a relatively easy decision. It wasn't cheap but it also wasn't that out of bounds for what a location had been costing us... and it was just... nice! One of the more comfortable and pleasant places to shoot that I can remember.
With the writing taking shape, we started to know what we needed and so Katie and Annie started putting it all together - reaching out to our cast and crew and locking them in, finding The Empty Bottle players... all the nitty gritty that goes into making it work. Magically (and a dose of love and loyalty) nearly all of our key players were available and ready to play... (Mark, sadly still stuck up in Toronto on Shadows duty)
As the weekend approached there was the normal, time-consuming duties of writing and rewriting and problem solving that you'd expect, but it's gotten a little easier over the years as we have a better sense of what to expect - what works and what doesn't and we're just used to the stress, I guess.
We had the space on Saturday and Sunday so Saturday we could build the set and stage and lighting etc... and pre shoot some stuff. We had shot the Dodge Charger bit the weekend before and had the Pep Boys stuff in the can from the season 14 shoot, we were coming into the weekend with a good 15-20 minutes of pre-shot stuff. At least we had THAT! We also got to rehearse with the Empty Bottle band, put together by Alex Jules and Eric Paparozzi (Neil Hamburger arranger) They brought in some serious heavy hitters to make the band a murders row of session folks that T clearly paid big bucks to lock in the win.
In the video trailer (the brains of the operation) is a mini Tim and Eric Awesome Show reunion - along with Eric N, is Dan Longino, Bill Benz, Joe Stakun, and Santiago Pedroza all manning computers, pulling stills, making edits pulling music and sound effects. It's an insane collection of funny people who GET it. Vic's at home sending new cuts of his DeNiro "tribute" (Fuck that made me laugh) Wes is in there making sure the internet and streaming stuff is all good to go... The big task Saturday night is shooting the Joey fight, which we get after 3 takes - later Katie and I are talking about how well it worked and she says "It's the knockout" and it hits us both how that connects to the season's theme song. I'm shocked and so happy I run out and find Gregg and Eric to tell them the news! Not in a million years would we have consciously written that, but it's just one of many examples of On Cinema Synchronicity!
Sunday, I get up early, open up our 40-page outline, and do some last-minute cleanup - adding and editing dialogue for the teleprompter, moving some stuff around, and deleting lots of old useless stuff... I'm in a race against the clock as I'm going to Charlie's opening day for baseball in under an hour and then it's straight to the hotel to start the day... I should have done that cleanup work the week before, but I'm a lifelong procrastinator. I really should have just hired a writer's assistant for the week.
I get into the Hotel and start getting hair and make-up - it's a good time to talk to some of the actors and walk them through the night. Some of them report to Gregg, some come to me, and I talk them through where their characters are at, storywise, emotionally, tone... Everyone is cool and excited and probably a little nervous as we all are.
Later, Gregg and I walk out to the main floor and have a bit of fatalist "well, here we go again" conversation and marvel as we look over the scale of everything: "How did we get HERE?" I survey the background players and pick a few people to play some small parts, we do a very rough rehearsal of the night - really just a cue to cue led by our incredible 1st AD Jason Brown... We get to nearly every major segment but not ALL of them, so there will be a few moments of the show that get no rehearsal at all.
The afternoon flies by and suddenly I'm getting final touches and I'm waiting in the wings for the countdown to hit ZERO HOUR! And then we're off! The night whizzes by with some audibles, and some chaos but no actual disasters - Magic happens on more than one occasion... In general, things just work...
In a break, we're getting word from the video truck that things are going well and really funny, but on the floor, it feels grim to Gregg and I - the room is (intentionally) dead - the background actors are doing a great job just sitting there like bumps on a log - and it's making it impossible for us to not feel like the whole thing is dying... But I have a chance to pop back to the back of the room and see a monitor and it totally changes things for me -It's so funny when you see how it's being presented.
I'm not drinking during the Scotch segment but by the time I pull out the Paton, I'm dipping in for a few sips, because I know things are going well and I could loosen up a little bit...
Before we know it, the night is over and the word from the video truck is we nailed it. Sam, our social media manager comes in and says "Great. There was a little hiccup, but overall great.." I'm like "What hiccup?" Oh, Vimeo went down for a minute...." FUCK!!!
I check with Katie and Wes and they are disappointed but assure me that everything got back on track very quickly and that it was 100 percent Vimeo's fault, which was infuriating as we had spent a lot of money to ensure a stable night, with tech support and extra bandwidth and all that. Wes says he's got the "receipts" and there will be a very angry call with them today from our time, I assume.
But overnight, a cutdown version (minus Phil's brilliant trivia) was uploaded and we have a smooth, 2 hr and 50-minute motherfucking live movie now streaming!
I feel so grateful and proud of the team that works their butts off to make everything so smooth and fun every year. After the dust settled we popped a big jar of peanut M&Ms and I had a waterloo and man we laughed.

I discovered and fell in love with On Cinema in the fall, so this was my first time watching live, and it exceeded my expectations with laughs from start to finish. Favorite line was after Joe and Richie give their reviews after the battle of the bands, Tim looks at Stevie Stewart and says “alright what do you have to say Slash?”

Absolutely loved it. I was laughing to tears while watching on my phone walking around the kitchen, and my wife was like what the hell are you watching? I could barely begin to explain what it was. Where to even start? It was just way too hard to lay out why this is one of the funniest and best-executed live pieces of comedy performance art that exists. Bravo to the team, this was a knock out.

The Pep Boys / Baboon movie was a top moment for me. It seemed like you all were on the verge of laughing. The character of Joey P has a Max Cady of Cape Fear (running time for 1991 version is 128 minutes). The rundown of the PQR coding system was top tier laughs. The big "moment" of G's speech and endless singing was so ridiculously bizarre and funny, especially since I was expecting that to be where the "big reveal" (G & T's responsibility for Matt's death) happened and it was such a nothing moment that went on forever. Also a very random detail, but I fucking lost it at the increasingly shitty-looking food pictures in the the Chaplin's segment

For me, it was The Big Bird. G. Amato's initial reference was my favorite bit of dialogue this season, I rewound the episode over and over again just to make sure he said what he said. As soon as Big Bird walked out, I nearly passed out laughing. It was an amazing payoff. Carlos's reaction made it even better. He did some amazing work overall this year. Big congrats, Tim - not only to yourself, but to Gregg, Eric and all of your team (both in front of and behind the camera). It was another memorable Special, one I won't soon forget.

I wasn’t watching the Oscars in real time so the OnCinema Special wasn’t synced up. So my family thought it weird that I busted out laughing during the In Memorium Oscar tribute. The bizarre mascots (like at the HEI ranch last year) and bargain Big Bird just take me out. Vic’s Bobby D cut had me crying- especially the love making and strange explosion scene he repeated a few times. Tim yelling at Joe about getting into “the brown”. Loved watching the Discord blow up with GIFs at the peaks. G Amato’s song and Greggs Indecent Proposal. Congrats to all involved and thanks for the gift that keeps on giving OC!

A 4-Star show, which I reserve for all-time classics. There were many notable moments: The "Movie Links" segment... I can't believe you guys did that to us... I had to get up and walk around the room, I was so pained. Eddie Alfano was great all season but was just incredible last night. He shot T. a look during "Joey's Take: Live" that was downright terrifying. Dumbass Corwin shows up to just sit there in front of his synth. Toni and T. sitting on the side of the stage like a couple of kids in love. The Pep Boys = The Three Stooges with un-simulated wrench violence. It was oddly cathartic to me when Joey finally kicked the shit out of T. and whipped Dumbledork into the shrubs (during an all-star blues jam). My partner SCREAMED out loud when T. reveals: "AMATO KILLED YOUR SON!" We loved it to pieces. You should be very proud! Thank you, guys!

There are podcasts with millions of subscribers who don't put a fraction of the production value into their stuff, and what OC has done is like nothing else out there. I’m not sure why you guys didn’t use YouTube from the start, given Vimeo have let you down a few times in the past. Well done on pulling off another impressive night of live entertainment. Big laughs - but my favorite "subtle" laughs from show might be 1) The fact that this is supposed to be a convention, where attendees are expecting to hear about business, etc, but get roped into a watching a "memorial" segment with some lady (Toni, to us) talking about her son getting shot.. 2) these might have been there throughout, but they were more prominent to me during the Special...Tim's apparent "pre-cancerous" spots that are on his forehead/temple area, certainly from sun over-exposure

BABOON!! A whole movie preview edited by Gregg??? What a treat. T hitting Mark with the wrench made me sick to my stomach. It just made it even funnier that Gregg would ignore this on-screen abuse of a poor brain damaged man and slap his Star Wars title sequences onto it (which made me absolutely cackle) I screamed out loud when the Empty Bottle Players started — couldn’t believe what I was watching. Loved the Matt Newman tribute song but the new version of Empty Bottle broke my brain — the sheer ego it takes for T to get this insanely tight blues band version JUST to lord it over Ax & Manuel — brilliant. Loved Joe getting a little firey, nice to see him fighting back a bit. Gregg’s Movie Links was viscerally uncomfortable as soon as I knew where it was going but watching him sit back down crushed me — I don’t know how I can keep coming back to feel bad for these characters but I still do. Same with Toni — watching her give T a kiss and have a drink in her hand broke my heart. Although when you cut to Gregg next and he’s in his Dumbledore costume with his pitiful little crystal ball he’s halfheartedly waving his hands around — it’s so pathetic but unbelievably funny. G. Amato was great! Love it whenever he sings, I wasn’t familiar with it but it sounded like a hymn? It felt strangely thematic and heavy, like it was the only admission of guilt or wrongdoing we would ever get from him. Someone else here pointed out that Joey might be having to pull the strings more than we realize, especially after watching G ready to shell out $6,000 for an old sandal. My eyeballs were GLUED to the screen for the entire finale. It was this feeling you guys are so good at — a combination of deep, deep horror, human darkness, and sheer silliness and absurdity— I can’t look away, and then something reminds me to take a step back and suddenly it’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. As soon as the band started playing that fucking blues jam I was sure I was going through the gates of hell. The tension building as soon as T starts his tantrum — you can see all the anger Joey’s bottled up throughout the night just come out. The scream T lets out is just shocking (and Gregg’s tumble into the bushes was really impressive, made me feel even worse for him) T coming out with his head wound (poetic after his treatment of Mark) and saying “Amato killed your son” to Toni as the CREDITS ROLL was so beyond fucked— the Empty Bottle Players just playing away while T reveals he KNEW the Amatos were seriously bad news — he threw it all away for a Dodge Charger his daddy wouldn’t give to him. It reminded me of the part in the Trial where the kid said DKR just kept playing Empty Bottle as kids were dying— that blues jam just blasting as chaos ensues. I’m horrified, my heart is racing — and then you cut to Big Bird. Holy shit. I completely forgot he was there. This is now the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. And I want to mention the gutter wand lady helping out Gregg at the very end — just a small bit of humanity I found very touching. There’s my whole essay, so much else I didn’t talk about, like Vic’s De Niro segment, new On Locations — amazing job to the whole team. You’ve done something very special!!

Great night. Your song about Matt, Gregg's proposal, and oh man the ending. I love that all the hell that broke loose was because you were pissed you didn't get the car haha. As for the hiccup, at the time it felt like an eternity but after replaying that part it turns out you went to a break pretty quickly after it shit the bed, so we barely missed a thing. We didn't know that at the time of course, but no harm done. Another amazing night, great work everyone!

I think my favorite part of the night was Joey. It was really interesting to see a "normal" man interacting with the On Cinema guys, and not from a position of owning Tim something. Unsurprisingly, it ends with Tim getting beat up for acting out of line! May I say, to your point about On Cinema synchronicity - it's also dividends paying off from "the hard work you've been putting in for years" With a runtime of 170 minutes, it's clear the special was a five bagger

I loved it. I just felt so bad for everyone in that room. So depressing but so funny at the same time. A while back I found some home organ showcase events on some crummy YouTube channel and ended up watching them feeling so depressed for the people there yet it’s so compelling to watch this dead end of an event they are desperately trying to make fun. It captured that perfectly. The dodge charge bit was brilliant and I love any time On Cinema Tim verges into Alan Partridge territory. I really wanted him to have that car and reward from Dad! Gregg’s proposal with the tapes and his Harry Potter chocolate gifts was excruciating. Poor Gregg. I loved him wandering around Universal Studios and just think of all the people seeing him in his Turner and Hooch jacket and Ma and Pa Kettle printouts Babboon: The Pep Boys Story was incredible. Joey’s rising anger with Tim was brilliant and loved the little reveal of Joey and Kylie on vacation. It made Gregg’s proposal even more awkward I know people always say it but it’s so similar to pro wrestling with this ongoing live movie/soap opera with these characters in live segments intertwined with pre recorded and controlled by production trucks and earpieces and arguments backstage and outside with you covered in blood coming back into the “arena”. It’s pure gold! It’s a huge achievement and I never want it to end and can’t wait to see what happens next!

Was this the first time Tim has received violence rather than giving it out?? It was hilarious to see that character Tim receive a taste of his own medicine and then gregg as dumbledore just flying off to the side took it to an insane level. Greggs ‘proposal’ felt truly truly UNCOMFORTABLE, it’s easy to sympathise with greggs character over Tim’s, but his unawareness and cluelessness to other people’s lack of interest crosses over into that really uncomfortable almost dark place and is just BRILLIANT. Kaili’s actress does a great job of being a foil to this and makes it even more uncomfortable. Not to get into a whole feministy thing when I’m not sure how intentional it is or if I’m reading too much into it, but her character really reflects a specific type of experience women have to go through where u can’t tell someone go GO AWAY so u just have to politely semi humour them, either until they get the hint or until they don’t and then u have to figure out how to navigate that. Idk her character feels very real in that way that I really appreciate. ANYWAY this comment is too long. Such a great night and an all timer Oscar special.

One of my favorite moments was T calling Joey, “Joey Patron” after he was told very clearly not to and Joey is standing back there just stewing mad. Overall very entertaining. Gregg’s near proposal would have been such a great marriage proposal to do in “real life” if he was actually involved with someone.

Favourite moment was seeing the return of the ever drunk and ever faithful Toni enjoying a drink off stage with Tim. I watched at the PhilaMoca screening with Bobby Valli. It was terrific. Got to meet Bobby Valli and take a pic. The empty bottle band was so good! I want to get a list of who those musicians are. It was my first time watching the special live and it was cool to do it in a room full of people with various levels of exposure to On Cinema. My favorite part was the video tour of the Dodge Charger.

Bravo! I really appreciate all the time and effort that goes into this from the entire team. I looked at my wife before it started, and we were as equally excited as when we saw Madonna in concert last month. The excitement on social media was amazing and hilarious. It is that BIG of a deal to a lot of people. So many good parts, but I think I laughed the hardest at sad Big Bird and the AI rendering of the shooter. Thank you for entertaining us so much!

Gregg's proposal to Kyli... I think you added to the On Cinema body count with that one. I think many people watching at home died. What a nightmare. The tension seemed to be maxed out the whole night. You were bullying Joe and Joey and everyone. I thought Joe was going to finally explode. I thought Joey was going to explode more than once. Joey looked like he mercifully spared your life at about five different points. He really shined this special. I'm still afraid of what he might do. I'm still perplexed at the relationship between G and him. I still can't figure G out. He's either a dark lord or a bumbling old man losing his marbles and Joey is pulling the strings. It was really awesome.

Poor Gregg. The more I think about it all the more I love it! Incredible as always.

I love how "it's the knockout" was unintentionally kismet. It really brought the season full circle. Also, Gregg's Movie Links made me want to crawl in my skin and die. It was amazing. Watching the chat blow up when people started realizing what was happening was AMAZING. Another great special! Can't wait to see where things go from there. Maybe a return to OG format after a loss of Amato funding?

Y’all outdid yourselves, which somehow you keep doing. Best special in years, maybe ever, and they’re all top shelf. I was surprised many times as I watched, which is the best thing in comedy and the reason most shows start to suck after they settle into a formula. Hard to name the best moment since there were so many - but just as a smaller detail, I loved how surly Joe Estevez was. He sold the shit out of that

Gregg's "movie links" had me cringing in the best way! Then the transition to Dumbeldore, iconic. The Big Bird bit had us howling, and I was genuinely moved by G. Amato's singing.
