It’s a weekly live show streamed tues nights at 7:30 that is pretty wonderfully curated -found footage from our childhoods, you tube rabbit holes we all would go down, there is a show specific to childhood programming and one about New York. It’s very nostalgic and funny and every week I remember a commercial jingle or old newscaster I enjoyed in the 80s. They do a music video show some fridays as well which is fun.

Unhalfbricking and liege and leaf by - fairport convention. They both came out in 1969. It's my favourite period of the band, they were living out in the British countryside all together writing and rehearsing in the same house. The Richard Thompson and sandy denny era was short but very special while it lasted. I duck out after these records but they are incredibly special. If you've not heard who knows where the time goes I'd start with that. Saying all this you could already be hip to it so my bad if so.

Listening to : Letta Mbulu! She came into my stratosphere somehow within the past few weeks and I've come to find out that she fled from apartheid in her home in South Africa in the 60s. *Insert comment about the relevance to current events.* Not necessarily a Tim reccomendation, but I'm sure I can put a fellow patron on to her. 'Nomalizo' is a super fun, loungey low-key dance track. Letta's ultra beautiful & smooth voice makes it for me. Reading: The Future Is Female: 25 classic pulp sci-fi stories written by women (including my Goddess Ursula K Le Guin) It had some stories I liked quite a bit, some just kinda, and others I skipped outright after only a page. I still reccomend though if you're into sci-fi reads, I think? Take that as you'd like! Excited to read through everyone else's!

I've been listening to John Darnielle's read of his book DEVIL HOUSE on tape and not only is his reading great, but holy hell, the novel is fantastic. The beautiful precision of his poetry is even more satisfying as prose, it almost feels unfair that someone could have immense talent in both areas. I imagine you have had him as a guest on your radar for a while now (having already had Jon Wurster on), but I think John would make a great guest both musically and generally. Other than that, I can only recommend more westerns, without any sense of whether or not they are available on streaming: JOHNNY GUITAR, RED SUN, THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, TERROR IN A TEXAS TOWN, WOMAN THEY ALMOST LYNCHED, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, NAVAJO JOE, BOSS, and if you're looking to get a little stranger GREASER'S PALACE and LUST IN THE DUST

There’s a true crime docuseries on Netflix called “Escaping Twin Flames”. Pretty standard, crappy true crime stuff about a cyber cult, but the guy who leads the cult is SO reminiscent of OC Tim. The poorly constructed speeches, intense narcissism, the endless “business” off shoots. I imagine there’s probably some inspiration for next season in there (not that you guys need it).

My friend reads Berserk and recommended Vagabond, a mature samurai manga. Just a general tip I hope will be helpful in your search: Berserk is in the “seinen” genre of manga, which Japan gears towards older males with adult themes/content. so you could look up those types of manga. lots of popular manga is in the “shonen” genre, which they gear towards boys/young men. Shonen is what I grew up with and is a major inspiration for the action scenes in my novel.

I just read “The Wolves of Eternity” by Karl Ove Knausgård. Great stuff. Like reading the most engrossing descriptions of paint drying. The Border Trilogy by Cormac McCarthy is great for a Western kick. Blood Meridian too. I found Lonesome Dove boring, predictable, and unnecessarily long. Just my opinion, sorry to ruffle feathers.

Some of my favorite westerns. Wagon master - since you mentioned you liked my darling clementine this is another of my favorite Ford westerns. The westerner - William Wyler Canyon passage and Way of a gaucho - both by Jacques tourneur I know others have mentioned Nicholas ray’s great Johnny Guitar. I would also recommend another Ray western called the lusty men. Tennessee’s Partner - Allan Dwan movie starring Ronald Reagan. Dwan has a lot of other good westerns too. Day of the outlaw- Andre de Toth Apache Drums - Hugo Fregonese A couple of more modern westerns I would mention are John Sayles’ movie from the 90’s called Lone Star, and Tommy Lee Jones’ Three burials of melquiades Estrada.

Listening to: Lots of Protomartyr. They went from a band I really liked to a band I love this past year. Experiencing them live for the first time propelled that jump. Always listening to The War on Drugs. On that note: Any chance of getting Adam Granduciel rebooked in the near future? And Drugs turned me on to a band called Advertisement. I actually never watched many Western Westerns. Growing up, I was more obsessed with spaghetti Italian Westerns by Sergio Leone. If you dip into the Dollars trilogy, I would love to hear your rankings. But thanks for the suggestions, I should branch out, head West. I’ve been chipping away at The Shining, it’s going to take me all year. Maybe dip into more horror with the comic “Tomie”.

I read Michael Mann and Meg Gardner's Heat 2, which was phenomenal. The tension is so unbearable I was screaming, and the showdowns between the characters are cataclysmic. I know people love the film Heat, but I find it to be ungainly and struggling to get out its turning points and characters. Heat 2 addresses those criticisms with its pinpoint precision. It was electrifying. I read John le Carre's Karla trilogy - Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy; The Honourable Schoolboy; and Smiley's People, all of which are excellent and made me feel the moral cost of spycraft and how its characters have to do things they don't like for pyrrhic victories. You have to really read closely to pay attention at times with the many characters and le Carre's use of British English, but it's quite powerful. I saw C'mon C'mon, which is pretty good, starring Joaquin Phoenix. Symphony for a Massacre is a great French noir about a quiet killer who betrays his mob of thieves that got a beautiful restoration. I rewatched Ikiru from Akira Kurosawa, which has so much passion and is so beautiful, though I felt the plot got a little less pointed by the last half of the movie. And I recommend Harold Lloyd's Girl Shy (1924) which I saw at the New Beverly with an audience that cheered and laughed in all the right places. One of my favorite films. I've seen it at least 20 times. Watch it with the score by Robert Israel. An early romantic comedy that's hilarious, makes us cheer for its characters, and has heart and fantastic stunts, including a ten minute thrill sequence to stop a wedding. The ending was copied in The Graduate, Our Gang characters show up, and there's a chariot chase in the thrill sequence that was copied in the silent Ben Hur and influenced William Wyler's Ben Hur. My second favorite Harold Lloyd film is The Kid Brother, which also has fantastic stunts, comedy, and a lot of heart. I rewatched Sidney Lumet's Prince of the City, which is one of my favorite films. It's stunning, powerful, and shows a corrupt cop trying to launder his conscience by informing on corruption while protecting himself and his partners, but he can do neither and must betray them. The film puts its protagonist through hell with impossible moral choices, and by the end, it's not even really clear if he's a good guy or not. It's chilling. Finally, here's Jordan Peterson's demented new fascist music video, featuring Ben Shapiro and Dave Rubin. And I’ll keep saying it until everyone experiences it: Reservation Dogs. It recently finished its three-season run and was one of the best shows of the past decade. Reading: Poverty, By America. Informative, sad and infuriating all in one.

i’ve been on a big western kick for a while too. i highly recommend the movie Hud, its not your typical 1880s western, a little more modern. paul newman is amazing in it. the audio version of Blood Meridian by cormac mccarthy is really good. and if you haven’t watched the pbs doc about the west, called “The West” its a good one too. and listen to some marty robbins tunes.

On the topic of televangelists and whatnot with Edi, I just watched a documentary called “The Secrets of Hillsong” on Hulu. It was good if a little long. Lots of hipster pastor cringe that I’m sure inspired Kelvin Gemstone’s general look. Finished Will Sergeant’s (Echo and the Bunnymen) second memoir “Echoes.” I recommend it and his first if you’re a fan. Also reading “Hot Zone” which I stumbled onto while trying to find something genuinely scary to read around Halloween. It’s about the discovery of Ebola virus and other “hot viruses.” It’s fascinating and terrifying.

Destry Rides again 1939 is a really great western a bit lighter fare though it still has some pathos. I often go to noir or westerns for escape. I'll have to check out Red River its Howard Hawks I see, I loved Rio Bravo. Thank you for another great OHL!

What I've been consuming lately: Movies - I've kicked off a Heinosuke Gosho deep dive. Gosho is a contemporary of Ozu and Naruse but seemingly very unknown in the West. Practically none of his films have been officially released with English subtitles. Only three films in so far but these are densely woven plots with incredible acting and a serious focus on the cause and effect of small actions. Closest I've seen to Italian Neorealism in postwar Japanese cinema. Music - Rebuilt my iPod this summer and been biking around to the old mp3 library and plugging it into the stereo at the factory I work at. Lots of nostalgia listening, but the two biggest "discoveries" are Paul Bley's Touching and They Threw Us by Liars. Not sure why I never gave Liars a chance, but they helped me through a stressful summer. Lit - Kind of halfway re-reading Blood Meridian since it's been in my backpack. Keep forgetting where I left off so re-reading a lot of stuff over and over again. Best thing I've read lately is Berzerk which I finally caught up on. First manga I've ever really read so would appreciate any recs based off that.

Never Seen Red River, but I remember that was the movie they were watching in the Last Picture Show, which is a very good and very fucked up movie. I haven't seen many classic Westerns apart from High Noon, which is a masterpiece. IIRC Scorsese really loved the Searchers. When I was younger, I enjoyed revisionist Westerns like Little Big Man and McCabe and Mrs. Miller.

Tim, if you're looking for escapist westerns that still pack a punch and have beautiful compositions, I'd recommend the films Budd Boetticher made with Randolph Scott. Ride Lonesome and The Tall T in particular. Westerns are a good rabbit hole to fall down. Outside of the 50 or so universally recognized classics, there are a lot of hidden gems, fun B-movies and interesting twists on the old formulas. And that doesn't even include the Italians.

Speaking of westerns , my son has been playing a lot of Red Dead Redemption lately asked me if there was a movie that had “red dead vibes” and I almost ran up to the blu ray collection and tumbled down the stairs with my copy of “The Good,The bad and the Ugly” before he could finish his question. Movie went over really well (had to watch it in two installments) Listen- a lot of the Clash and Joe Strummer solo albums lately Cook- baked ziti with a mushroom tomato gravy Read/Podcast- 60 Songs that Explain the 90s by Rob Harvilla (excellent podcast with a book dropping Tuesday)
