Halloween Spooktacular with Open Mike Eagle, Nick Lutsko! (Office Hours+ Episode 273)
🕑 Added 2023-10-25 15:00:11 +0000 UTCThe fun never started and the screams never stopped for the fourth annual Office Hours Halloween Spooktacular with very special guest hip-hop artist/podcaster/comedy connoisseur Open Mike Eagle, a suitably scurrilous City of the Day sponsor (27:11), and a deranged dip into the new music of the Rolling Stones and Alice Cooper (34:22). PLUS, a check-in with the very funny music man Nick Lutsko (1:12:21), Tim's Batman (1989) movie recap (1:17:45), Doug's Guess the Candy Game (1:39:08), and a quick look at the latest clips from Donald Trumps Sr. and Jr. (1:54:51). Starts @ 1:33.

Yeah send me a friend request if you want to chat, or your ID#. I just posted in the OHL main thread and a subthread. I’m a new fan but I haven’t seen any perpetuating of tired tropes related to race or gender yet, and a lot of the women-presenting guests seem very aware of the climate. The guys seem to mostly stay in their lane, which I do appreciate since we’ve had a lot of men talking for/over women already (although almost anything is allowed for pro choice stuff though, for me). Of course, everything is framed in absurdity so I noticed that targeting part of a message’s extremism usually appropriately dismisses the other offensive stances the message contains. Like Peterson’s academy idea. I can get into this on Discord, but to summarize: the academy fully represents misuse of privilege, wealth, and glosses over income disparities. Countering the proposal essentially, to me, counters its ideas. OHL moves quickly, though, so discussion on the Discord is probably best.

@lilula9 I'm on the discord and would love to hear your take on misogynoir via OHL. as a WOC, it can get challenging to be a fan of this show.
Colin Pressler
Good (sometimes awkward) show. How did Mike’s podcast not come up!? Every season of What Had Happened Was has been great!
Jackie
She would be great on the show!
Alex Homan
Very scary!!!

I appreciate hearing your personal feedback. I can see how OHL would want to open the floor for a critique straight from an artist established in the genre so they avoid “speaking for” rappers, but I can also see how tiring it can get to always have to be put on the spot. I’m Asian-American and the “othering” behavior of others can make me go back and forth between offering some education or noping out of the topic if I’m too tired to engage. Even you putting out your comment takes work, I acknowledge that. (I am thinking of briefly touching on misogynoir on a loosely related tangent later on Discord, if you’re on there.)

I would put Sleaford Mods under the rap umbrella

Batman '89 looks like it was shot with a dogshit filter on the lens.

Great segments all around! Doug’s candy game was great, Vic’s edits turn the break onto a highlight, and Nick’s song/video was A+

Matt’s costume is fantastic
Fight Haver
Interesting thing to do considering Tim also dismisses rap completely and couldn't help but lightly acknowledge that

Really embarrassing move to have the only rapper ever on the show, then pull up some random video of Jerry Garcia sharing his distaste for rap music. Like “hey, only black guy in the room, whaddya think of this?”. I’m sure no animosity or “micro aggressions” were intended, but, as a black person i really personally hate being in these types of situations. Who gives a fuck what Jerry Garcia thinks of hip hop music?
John Galantini
Nothing worse when someone calls in and tries to do a bit. 😩 leave it to the professionals
