She blinked. It took several seconds for the scene she was working on to fade enough for her to register that Roth stood in her office doorway. Before she could ask him what he was doing here at this hour, he stepped aside, revealing a black woman in an immaculately tailored pantsuit.
“Sunny?”
Jasmine shot up from her chair, sending it crashing into the wall as she rushed over to wrap her arms around her former security coordinator. Sunny, who had never been the affectionate type, cleared her throat and gave her an awkward pat on the back.
Jasmine drew back. “What are you doing here?” When Sunny hesitated, she glanced at Roth. “What’s going on?”
He gently detached her hold on Sunny and nudged her back toward her office before saying, “Give us a minute, will you?”
Sunny gave a militant nod. “Of course. I’ll wait in the parlor.”
Roth closed the door before he turned to face Jasmine who had her arms crossed over her chest.
“Sunny is your new personal bodyguard.”
Jasmine frowned and opened her mouth, but he didn’t give her time to respond.
“She’ll shadow you everywhere you go. That includes your time here, in the penthouse. The only time she won’t be present is if I’m with you.”
Jasmine tensed ever so slightly as the ramifications of Sunny’s true role hit her. “Do you not trust me? I told you, I wouldn’t…”
His eyes burned as he reached out and cupped her cheek. “I don’t take chances where you’re concerned.”
