“It’s natural for me to touch someone I care about!” she snapped.
“Then touch me.”
His words hit her in the gut. She turned from him, her focus on the door and avoiding his statement and all it implied. She didn’t make it. He grabbed her by the shoulders and pushed her against the wall. He moved in close and cupped her chin, lifting it so she was forced to look at him. He was breathing hard and his eyes were fixed on her, the emotion in them so stark, she averted her gaze.
“Look at me,” he ordered.
She closed her eyes against the sight of him. She had given too much of herself before. She couldn’t do that again. There was motive behind every action, every word. Whatever his game was, she wanted no part of it. He was so volatile and exhausting and she was tearing at the seams. He was suffocating, worse than he had been the first time they married. Any attempt she made to distance herself, to rebuild her shields, he immediately shut down.
He pressed his lips against her temple. “You don’t want me to destroy him? Touch me.”
