“Hi, love.”
The deep, British drawl was the last thing she expected. For a moment, she was at a loss and then, “Grayson?”
“I had to great creative since he’s monitoring your phone, email, and any other method of communication you have. Today, he just so happened to mention where you were so I thought I’d take advantage of the situation and ask what you have planned for his birthday.”
She blinked. “I'm sorry?”
“His birthday.” Pause. “You knew it was coming up, right?”
“Yes, but he doesn’t like to make a fuss about it.”
“You aren't going to let that stop you, are you?"
"I can't make him do something he doesn't want to do,” she said a tad defensively.
There was an undignified, hooting laugh on the other end.
“I don’t know what’s so funny," she muttered.
“You are, sweetheart.”
“You want to let me in on the joke?”
“The joke is you thinking you have no influence over him. He would do anything for you.”
“You’re mistaken.”
There was a long pause and then he said very seriously, “Some day soon, you and I need to talk.”
