Filled with the Christmas Spirit Pt 1
🕑 Added 2024-02-01 14:59:37 +0000 UTCHey everyone. So this is the first time I was able to work with the extraordinary artist, Murdelli, for the first time. He put together some amazing artwork for my Christmas story, "Filled with the Christmas Spirit".
There are six parts, all of which will be posted today. Be on the lookout because I am almost done with a short story, which will then be followed by more illustrations.

The house was already full of McMichael’s and friends as the SUV pulled up to the curb to park. Cara exited first, straightening her sweater and slacks after they had bunched up a bit in the car. She waited for her husband to get next to her and lead the way, as she was not going to enter the party first.
“Well, let’s get to it”, Nick said as he grabbed his wife’s hand and entered the party.
Inside, the couple were immediately greeted by the host and hostess, Gary McMichael and his wife, Michelle, who were warm and friendly. Gary, who was almost a twin to Nick, except for having more gray hairs, and a Michelle, a sweet plump woman who hadn’t been able to drop her pregnancy weight. Both were older than Nick and Cara, and while attempts had been made, there were not many double dates between the couples.
“Hey, Merry Christmas! Welcome to Mi Casa!”
“Merry Christmas, cousin. Here. Something for your living room.”
Nick handed the Happy Birthday bag to Gary, which elicited a smile from Gary.
“Ah, guess the stores didn’t have any Christmas bags, it is a smaller holiday”, he said, laughing as he put the bag on the end table and helped them into the house.
It was packed with people as Nick maneuvered his way inside and said hello to some of his family. Cara talked to Michelle for a bit, subtly trying to hint at the new gym she was considering, in an attempt to help the woman drop those excess lbs. That fell on deaf ears however once the couple’s baby began crying from the other room, prompting her to leave and making Cara return to her husband’s side. Thankfully for them, it only took another ten minutes before people got bored with them and returned to their prior conversations.
“See, people didn’t bother us for too long”, Nick said as he took a sip of water.
“We could totally leave right now and outside of Gary and Michelle, no one would notice or care.”
They laughed as Cara reached over to a vegetable platter and popped a carrot into her mouth. Nick followed suit with a piece of broccoli and dipped it in the sour cream. This got a evil look from his wife as he did.
“We’re supposed to be cutting calories and fat content, babe. You know sour cream is heavy in both.”
Nick smiled as he took a carrot and did the same to it.
“I’ve been told that since it’s a holiday, this doesn’t count, ha-ha.”
Cara rolled her eyes and then just did the same.
“Fine, but I don’t want any complaints if this ass can’t fit into that bathing suit you got me for my birthday when we are on our cruise next year”, she said as she bit into the crunchy vegetable.
“We’re BOTH doing an extra session on the bike tomorrow, don’t worry.”
Cara’s face was dejected as she realized he wasn’t joking. Still, she grabbed another vegetable and dipped it in the creamy substance, apparently resigned to the fact she’d burn it and everything else off tomorrow.
The afternoon was boring for the duo as they stayed together, only separating when they had to use the restroom, and even then most of the time they just got in line together so they wouldn’t have to associate much with others. They weren’t exactly friendly people to begin with and being in tight spaces with others wasn’t their idea of a good time. Thus, they kept to themselves.
Eventually, after barely touching anything at dinner (Cara stuck to some grilled string beans and a little bit of turkey, while Nick had some brussels sprouts and some turkey, and a glass of scotch that was offered to him by his cousin), they decided it was time to leave. They said their goodbyes to everyone, declined taking home food and left.
The ride home was short as no one was on the rode at 5:45 on Christmas Day, so they were home rather quickly. Nick practically collapsed on the couch and Cara rushed to the bathroom to pee. She emerged a few minutes later and grabbed the seltzer from the fridge and then poured a glass of it and vodka into a small glass and returned to the couch.
“Oh, my bad, I should have asked, do you want anything to drink, babe” she asked before sitting down.
“No, it’s ok. I’ll get up in a second. I am just so glad to be fucking home”, he replied.
“Tell me about it. Your uncle was looking at me with those creepy eyes all night, I swear I think he even winked at me at one point!”
“Ha, babe, he has a lazy eye, remember. He looks at everyone.”
“No, this was with his good eye, trust me”, she said, shuddering as she took a swig of alcohol.
“Well, I can kick his ass next time if/when I see it. Thankfully for you and him, we won’t see him again for another year.”
“Thank god”, she said as they both laughed and relaxed.
The evening was uneventful as the two enjoyed another beverage before making their way to the bedroom to go to sleep. They both figured it’d be a busy day of exercise and preparing for work the day after.
