The place was more packed than Tamara was expecting, as she struggled to get through the hustle and the bustle. She has passed by several booths, most trying to get her to purchase some ridiculously fattening food stuff, and others trying to get her to play some stupid game that clearly no one can win. She was disgusted by it.
As she passed another booth selling donuts and other baked goods, she stood in front of a big tent for a moment. It talked about “world renowned furs” inside, but, ironically enough, it had three help wanted signs next to said poster. As she squinted a bit to get a better look, she saw that it was a request for a “strong man”, “knife swallower” and “circus fat girl (or man if need be). She laughed to herself at this place bragging about world renowned furs and then in the next instance having the nerve to say most of the positions needed to put on said act were unemployed. Snickering, she continued checking her phone and walking.
Tamara figured she was about halfway through the fair when she glanced to her right side to see a massive wolf light up a cigarette and flash her a toothy grinned. His face unnerved her and as he stuck his pockets in his form fitting jacket, a chill seemed to brush by her muzzle. She did not like this and decided to pick up the pace in her steps to get past him.
“114! 114!”
Tamara heard someone yelling those numbers out, but paid them no mind and kept walking. However, the yelling only got louder.
“114! Miss! I said, 114!”
The tigress turned her head around to see that the wolf was now looking directly at her, a toothy grin on his imposing face. He took a long pull of his cigarette and yelled “114” again. Tamara was unsure as to why he kept saying that, until she looked directly above him. He was running a “Guess your weight” booth, and, apparently, he was guessing her weight.
“Huh?”
“Oh, I’m sorry miss. I just thought I’d show off a little. I said your weight was 114. Am I correct?”
The wolf again flashed that smile, acting like he was trying to seem polite and friendly, though she could not tell if it was for her benefit or the benefit of the small group of furs around this stand.
“Um, no. I’m not 114”, she replied. It was true, when she got on the scale yesterday, the numbers had flashed to 112. And seeing as how she only had a protein bar and water on her car ride, she sincerely doubted that the number was that high.
He looked a little puzzled when she said she was not 114, and glanced at her deeper. He squinted his eyes and made it like he was concentrating harder, and then finally grinned once again.
“Hmm, are you sure. I have a scale back here and we can definitely verify. I’m usually NEVER wrong.”
He winked at her as he took another drag of his cigarette. She was completely disgusted by this and felt the bile start to come up her throat. She did not have the time, nor did she have the desire to interact with such a disgusting creature. She simply shook her head and tired walking off.
“Miss! Miss”
She heard him yelling back at her and wanted to ignore it, but for some reason she stopped dead in her tracks. She turned back to him, seeing that he was trying to wave her down. The group of furs around his stand had grown and she could tell this was probably just an act or part of the show, to get business. She was not having it, not today.
“What? What do you want! I already told you, I’m not fucking 114.”
“Are you su..”
“Yes, I’m fucking sure”, she yelled back, cutting him off. “Why don’t you go try and guess one of these lard asses’ weights? I’m sure you can if you break out the fucking weigh stands at the truck stops!”
She didn’t know where that outburst came from, it wasn’t like her to just scream like that. Then again, she was having a hard day and being accosted by some fat, demon looking wolf was not on her to do list. She just wanted to get a tow truck and get the fuck out of there.
The wolf did his best to diffuse the situation, calming those around him down before waddling over to the tigress. She expected him to be annoyed, but instead he had that same smile on his face. This was almost worse.
“Look, miss. I apologize for getting ya aggravated, but there’s no need to take it out on the fine folks of this town”, he said matter of factly, in a thick southern accent. “They’re just here looking for a good time and to have fun with their families and friends. No need to insult em.”
Tamara knew he was right, she really did. However, given the state of how her day had gone, and the fact that it seemed like no one was going to get back to her about a tow, she wasn’t in the mood to play nice.
“That’s probably true, but I don’t need some pushy person getting all in my business and yelling numbers at me, even after I told him I ain’t 114. I just want to be left alone and get to Florida. That’s all.”
He smiled an even toothier grin at her. That chill from before returned and she found herself really uncomfortable. She had to get out of there.
“Excuse me.”
Tamara frantically pulled out her phone and hit redial to contact that “Dale’s Towing” once more. She did not even care if no one picked up, she was going to act like she had someone on the phone anyway. She heard the dial tone and then got very excited when it seemed like someone picked up the phone.
“Hello! Is this Dale’s towing”, she yelled. With all the noise from the fair, she could barely hear him.
“Yes, this is Dale.”
“Oh thank god. Listen, my name is Tamara Hopkins. My car broke down outside this fair I need a tow.”
“Well, I’d be happy to help Ms. Hopkins. But ya see, I run a booth until 5 and I’m not going to close it down, especially for a woman who yells at my potential customers.”
“Wait, what?”
Tamara was very confused and was about to ask another question, when she heard laughing come from behind her and in her ear. She turned around to see the wolf with his flip phone to his ear, laughing and flashing his teeth at her once more.
“You son of a bitch. Who the fuck are you?”
“Name’s Dale. I run Dale’s Towing. Like I said, the booth closes at 5 and I can’t leave until it does.”
“Ugh, this day cannot get any fucking worse!”
She saw him make his way slowly towards her as he closed the phone and put it into his tight pants pocket. He threw his cigarette to the ground and damped it out before standing over her. He had a good two feet on her, so he seemed very imposing.
“I’m sorry that you need a tow. I’ll tell you what though. You wait out here until 5 and good ole Dale here will get ya car and bring you into my shop. Can probably get you fixed tonight, but only if you ask nicely.”
He winked at her again, which made her want to vomit. She actually felt the bile reach up into her throat and almost make its way past her lips, but she held it in and swallowed it.
“Can you get my car towed? I’ll do anything. I just want to get back in my BMW and get to this new job.”
She tried acting seductive, thinking flirting would make him more receptive to helping. Instead, he just let out a loud laugh that was border line a roar. His great belly shook up and down and his pants button almost exploded off from the force. He just laughed a bit more before grabbing another cigarette and lighting up.
“Ha-ha. I appreciate that, I do. You’re def a little too thin for me though. I like my girl to have some meat on her.”
“Oh, lucky me.”
“I see. Well, apparently you don’t want to be nice, so I’m just going to go back to the booth. Try calling Stanley over in Yorkdale. He should be able to get to ya by tomorrow at 9 am. See ya.”
He turned around to head back to the booth. His bushy tale covered up his ample sized rear and waddled away. Tamara, knowing she was completely screwed, realized she had no choice. She jogged up and past him and turned around, so that they were facing once more.
“Look, I’m sorry. I’m just having a bad day. Please. I’ll really do anything. I’ll be nice. I promise.”
She looked up at him, hoping he believed her. He nodded in approval and took another big drag and ushered her to follow him.
“I’ll tell ya what. I’m gonna help ya out” he said, as he leaned in close to her ear.
She could feel him breathing on her. It made her sick. Instinctively, she backed up, but he just moved in closer, his snout a mere inch from her.
“Look, just play this up for the crowd, ok? I know it’s stupid and obnoxious, but it’s how I make my living. Just work with me.”
He backed up, allowing his gut to wobble in front of him as he stood back up straight. Tamara shook her head in disgust and wiped her ear. She was repulsed, but she also knew this guy was probably her best shot at leaving before morning.
“Fine.”
“Great. Now, I just have one more question, since we got a group still waiting.”Dale immediately went to back to entertainer role and laughed it up for the crowd. He waved people to come closer and just smiled more as Tamara watched the circle grow closer.
“Ladies and gentlemen, Ms. Tamara Hopkins has been so kind to give me a chance to guess her weight again, isn’t that right Ms. Hopkins.”
“Uh, yeah”, Tamara replied, gritting her teeth. “God how I want to be out of there”, she thought to herself.
“Well, let’s see. You’re pretty thin. Probably do yoga or something. I’m gonna say, ya weight is, 108.”
“Sure”, she replied, hoping to get this over with. “I’m 108. You’re really talented.”
He could tell how sarcastic she was being, and so could the crowd. He knew she was messing with him and he was not happy. He was being nice to her and she was still being mean. He figured he’d give her one more chance to be nice.
“No, no. You’re not 108. I think you’re really 112. Am I right?”
“I just said I was 108. How the fuck could I be 112? Do they not have logic in the south”, she replied, even though she knew that he had been right with the 112 guess.
This elicited some groans in the crowd, infuriating Dale. Now, she was being mean and insulting him as well. He was not going to stand for that, not in the least.
“Well, you’re probably really 841 pounds then. At least, that’s what I think you are.”
“Right, 841 pounds. Stick to towing cars, Dale. I’ll see you back here at 5.”
The wolf was about to let her go, but then he saw the crowd as they dispersed. They were seemingly still laughing at him. That would not do and he knew as good as anyone, if someone insults your pride and livelihood, well, you make them pay.
“Oh, Tamara, one more thing!”
She stopped in her tracks. She was so annoyed, so agitated, that she actually thought about giving up hope on getting towed that night and just slugging him in the gut. Still, when she turned to see how big he was, she thought better of it.
“What, Dale? What? Are you going to make me help you juggle” she replied, dismissively.
He held up a hand, waving her back. As she walked towards him, he reached back behind the booth and removed a black bag. It had some weird writing on it and as he opened it up, a bit of dust flew into his face. He coughed for a moment and pulled out what appeared to be a white wrist band. He mumbled to himself for a moment before blowing on the band, the dust flying off of it and the words “V.I.P.” seemingly appear like magic.
“Don’t know why I feel obligated to, but I do” he said as she got to his booth. I guess call it my, southern hospitality, cause I’m even gonna give ya this wrist band. It’ll give ya access to all the rides, booths, hell even all the food stands, free of charge. Ya just need to meet me back here at 5 and we’ll get ready to go. How’s that sound?”
“Whatever man. Can I go?”
“Sure.”
He held out his hand, as if to shake hers. She sighed and stuck hers out to meet his, but he instead pulled his back and clasped the wristband to her wrist. It immediately got stuck on her fur and she cursed out loud, even more annoyed and frustrated with how her day was going.
“Ugh, you asshole! That’s going to tear!”
“Whoops! I’m so sorry. I’ll make it up to ya, I promise. I won’t charge for the tow. Deal?”
Not having to pay for a tow was the least he could do, but for now she supposed it would be enough.
“Yeah, great”, she said as she turned from him and pushed past the crowd and walked away, giving everyone one last view at her non-existent rear.
