Pamela typed away at her keyboard, glancing over occasionally at her second monitor, which she had set up vertically. It made it easier to keep track of the numbers she had to input into the spread sheets for each of Terrence’s weekly reports to the group. It was a bit tedious, but it wasn’t anything Pamela had not been prepared to do.
She finished her third column before reaching over to her left and grabbing her cup of coffee, taking a hearty swig of the warm mocha latte from Starbucks before going back to typing. She usually stayed away from this type of fare, but she wasn’t paying for it, so, per her boss’ suggestion, why not go all out?
She had been unaware when she got the job, but apparently GluttCo, Inc. had business with many of the fast food industry and food providers. Because of this, the staff was entitled to Starbucks/Dunkin Donuts twice a day as well as free lunches and, if they were forced to work overtime, free dinner too. Car service was also provided for overtime so Pamela knew she wouldn’t have to take a train going home. That was a big relief.
As of yet, she had not been working long hours, though she had only been there a month. She anticipated, knowing Terrence’s work load, that she would eventually be stuck there quite a bit.
She shifted in her massive chair, trying her best to get comfortable. It wasn’t as easy as one would think, even in a chair that had no armrests and one built to hold someone over 700 pounds. The cushion had too much give, and she felt herself sinking in, even though she did not weigh that much. Her tail brushed against the reinforced steel pole connecting things, sending a slight chill through her body. She shrugged it off and resumed typing.
It was not long into her typing when her phone rang. It was her boss on the other end.
“Pamela, I have a few new notations to the budget report. Do you mind coming in for a little while I go through them? Shouldn’t take long. I also got some Dunkin, so we can snack and chat.”
“Thanks, boss. I’ll be in shortly.”
Pamela hung up and groaned. She was appreciative of how nice her boss was, but it seemed like he and everyone else in the office was always eating, and worse, trying to get her to eat too. For the most part, she had held firm, but there were definitely a few occasions when she felt bad and ultimately relented and had a donut. Or a brownie. Or a slice of pizza. Or a taco. Days like that made her regret her choice of employment, but she eventually just decided to do more time on her bike when she got home.
She had resisted temptation for years, she could survive friendly coworkers and the treats they purchased.
With that, she picked up her coffee and headed into her boss’ office, ready to tackle the next project.
