There’s a cut song about Barbara having had a miscarriage which was the original explanation for their reluctance to start a family: they were struggling through that trauma and pretending that everything was normal and okay. I know it was cut but I still have it in my headcanon as part of the reason they latch onto Lydia and become second parent figures to her—they already really wanted a family but they were scared to try again.

It's actually not that they're coming to terms with being ghosts, but that they've been running from the idea that they should be taking the next step and making the family they want. Instead they've been hiding behind hobbies and projects that they didn't even like. Now they're embracing the idea that they can take that step and be the parental friends that Lydia needs in her life to support her.
