Getting caught up on these since I finally watched Hamilton - love that you both are getting me to watch things I normally wouldn't, and I'm enjoying it immensely. So about that next big project... 😆

Yeah, he had Bipolar disorder. Back then they didn’t know how to treat it, so his doctors used to physically torture him. They said the pain would distract him from his mind. Unfortunately, it just made it worse.

Catching up on these! For the record "Farmer Refuted" - while it might have a double meaning, is also just the name of Hamilton's response to Samuel Seabury. In real life, these were basically like published articles, not an argument in the street, and Seabury wrote his anti-revolutionary texts as "A Westchester Farmer". So "Farmer Refuted" is basically Alexander Hamilton saying "This Farmer is talking shit and here's why."

Something else I love about Jonathan's performance is that he doesn't blink at all during this performance, he closes his eyes briefly when he hits "can't go on" but outside of that he keeps his eyes open the whole time

while it sounds like a waltz - and you definitely could waltz to it if you really wanted, since it's still a three-beat - it's definitely a minuet. fits better historically and makes more of a point to reinforce the class difference! also recognisable by the almost exaggerated accent on the first beat (that I think you comment on too, actually).

Trivia: Samuel Seabury was an America Episcopal bishop and British loyalist. He wrote under the pseudonym "A. W. Farmer" ( 'a Westchester farmer'). The Farmer Refuted, 1775, was Alexander Hamilton's second book, arguing against Seabury.
