my son, the puppy
This summer I adopted a kitten. I named him Robert. He's 7 months old now, so he's getting long and tall, but still so full of energy. If you've had cats before, none of this is new. Youknow. I don't gotta tell you how fun kittens are, right? But Robert does something that I've never experienced with a cat before, and honestly, I don't even see it in many dogs. And that is: Robert likes to play fetch. He has this grubby lit...

Director’s Notes: Episode 258 - Swap Meet
I did not set out to make a Night Vale Sanitation Department trilogy when I wrote my very first episode (Ep 101 Guidelines for Disposal) seven years ago. I was not playing the long game where I strategically planned to drop a new installment of the waste utilities saga every 3-4 years. But that’s what has happened nonetheless! A nearly decade-spanning epic, a franchise if you will, of all the rules and regulations from your local trash disposal...

Some thoughts on a day
I don't have much useful to add. I was confident about the outcome of this election and I was wrong so I don't feel confident about anything else. But I just wanted to offer two things: a memory and a gift. When the 2016 election happened, Meg and I were living in a cramped AirBnB in London while Meg and Jeffrey helped start the London neo-futurist theater company. I wanted nothing more than to shut down for a few weeks after that terrible ...
Director’s Notes: Episode 257 - Traffic
A few months ago I traded in my truck. I lived in a rural area of the Hudson Valley for the past many years, and I owned a Ford F150. Really helpful for carrying lumber and soil for garden and woodworking projects. Also for hauling trash once a month to the county dump. But as I mentioned in my last post here, I moved back to Brooklyn this past year, and that F150 was NOT built for the city.I bring this up because while writing this episode I was...

The second season of Unlicensed is out now!
Six years ago, I sent an email to Jeffrey about an idea I had for a LA detective show. That show is now in its second season, with a third season coming in 2025. This show is, I genuinely believe, the best thing Jeffrey and I have ever written, and I've come to love Molly and Lou, and have loved spending the last few years with them. The description for this season is below, and you can listen to the whole thing nowwith a free trial from Aud...

Sports Tears
When I moved back to Brooklyn last year, I decided a couple of things: 1) I wanted to live in a great neighborhood; and 2) I wanted to get season tickets to the New York Liberty (WNBA team).I found a great apartment in Park Slope and I got a single season ticket to every Liberty home game. I had never watched the Liberty before this year’s home opener, not even on television. But I knew I loved basketball, so I was certain I’d have a fun time...

Director's Notes: Episode 256 - The Book of Lost Things
During our last live tour, The Attic (now available for purchase here!), Jeffrey Cranor played local community college professor Harrison Kip. Jeffrey and I always write each other’s guest parts, and we tend to give each other little challenges in the scenes. For instance, Jeffrey wrote me a part that involved a great deal of shouting and physical performance, which is quite different than anything I’m usually comfortable doing on stage. For ...

Director’s Notes: Episode 255 - The John Peters Imaginary Corn Maze Experience
In one of my early story meetings with Joseph and Jeffrey, they asked if I had any ideas for upcoming episodes. I didn’t come to the meeting prepared to pitch anything but luckily I had an open document of random Night Vale related notes I’ve jotted down over the years and my eyes landed on the phrase “John Peters imaginary corn maze”. I do not remember writing this down at all. But I went ahead and said it out loud and now, here we are! ...

Vulture-Wally (the only song i've ever written)
This was from Jillian Sweeney's 2013 performance art/dance piece Vulture-Wally at St. Marks Church in NYC. I co-wrote and directed this piece, and Jillian asked if I could write a hymn that breaks down. I've never written or even studied music. So I told Joseph that the only way I could think to write a song was to listen to a bunch of hymns and operas and try to find and interesting musical phrase to build a song upon. And Joseph was lik...
