Otto & Olya Pages 3-5 Commentary

Hey there everyone, apologies for it being a while since the last post. I’ve had a series of setbacks from an unexpected technical problem - my iPad had some irreparable damage, forcing me to buy a new one, and the new one has been stuck “restoring” from a 375GB iCloud back up for the last SIX DAYS and it still isn’t finished. Due to the stupid nature of how iOS works I can’t even open Procreate until it is finished restoring, and that...

Otto & Olya Page 2 Commentary

Storytelling-wise this page remained mostly the same from its original version:Looking back on it, I wasn’t terribly satisfied with the pose of the DJ in the second panel, I felt that it could be more interesting/sexier, and put a little more care into the equipment in the booth. The large panel of the crowd in the club also felt a little sloppy and lazy to me, the figures are really just a detail-less blob and I wanted to put in some more defi...

Otto & Olya Page 1 “commentary”

I’m in a Discord group with a few other artists and when I told them my intention to redraw everything I’d done on O&O so far it was met with pushback - they thought that despite my growing dissatisfaction with what I’d already drawn, it was better for me to just accept it and push forward, because it was better to complete a project than “chase my own tail forever.” It’s not the worst advice, but looking back on the old pages I real...

Otto & Olya - Pages 1-10 (Redux)

Here are the first 10 pages of the newly-revised Otto & Olya comic. I decided to start over from scratch for several reasons, but one of them was that I wanted to draw them on paper instead of completely digitally. I also felt that in the (long) time since I drew the old pages I had some different ideas for where the story was gonna go and how I wanted to handle it all, and how to improve the storytelling, as well as just having a stronger sense ...

I really liked this little sketch but couldn’t make it work with the composition…

Cameron Stewart post Miniature Concept Art from patreon

Miniature Concept Art

Early last year I was commissioned to produce a design for a miniature figure of a cheerleader character. Here are the drawings I did - the first one was far too much like Harley Quinn for both myself and the client’s liking, and was also working from an incomplete set of notes. After receiving the full direction I produced the final design. You can see (and purchase) the unpainted base model over at Instagram.com/miniacal_

Granular Decisions

Sometimes I tinker with small stuff. In this panel I wanted Otto to give a little signal to Olya. Originally I had sketched it out as a thumbs up, but also considered a nod. I tried a thumbs up, then a nod, then both, then a nod without the movement lines. I finally settled on just the nod. (I also kind of like “sound effects” that are a description of an action - one of the things that only comics can do).

Cameron Stewart post Otto & Olya revisions from patreon

Otto & Olya revisions

I’ve been going through the pages of O&O i drew previously and deciding that they needed revising, so I’ve been punching up/redrawing panels to make them better, more exciting, more interesting, whatever. I have always been a notorious perfectionist but I am usually much happier when I fix stuff to my satisfaction. This is a personal project and I want it to be as good as it can be. Kubrick did a hundred takes of every shot right???The previ...

Otto & Olya Rendering Tests

Restarting Otto & Olya pages after some time away (both being too busy with the work that pays the bills and needing some time to refine what I want to do with it) and am trying to determine if I want to do black and white or a kind of Euro-BD watercolor approach. Super rough tests to see what I think of them. Still leaning black and white.

Olya Study Timelapse

I was doing some quick sketches of Olya dancing and decided to turn one of them into a more finished drawing. I imported it into Procreate and drew over it (it’s on an “invisible” layer but I’ve attached the pen sketch below). It sometimes takes me a while to fine tune the pose to get it where I want it to be.

Cameron Stewart post Untitled ink drawing from patreon

Untitled ink drawing

I really struggle with assigning titles to drawings. If it’s a story I can do it but if it’s just an illustration I never know what to call it, and there’s enough repeating imagery in my work that it would get unwieldy just adding basic descriptions or Roman numerals. Anyway here’s an untitled drawing. As usual, for sale.

I posted a digital version of this a while ago and decided to ink it - as always this is for sale, DM me if you want it!

PRICING CHANGE (A good thing!)

Hey there everyone, I have been thinking a lot about how I want to run this Patreon and thinking that I need to make some changes to pricing and what I offer. Do not worry - this is not an increase! I have decided that I want to get rid of the different tiers and just combine everything into one feed, and make it easier for me (less stress deciding what goes into which tier and worrying about whether I am providing enough value) and cheaper for y...

Just playing around this morning, did this sketch that’s referenced from the very famous photo of Grace Jones but not directly trying to copy it. Has an interesting kind of early Dave McKean vibe.
