Chapter 48: Arthur's Moment
🕑 Added 2024-06-02 10:35:23 +0000 UTCArthur waited quietly until the sound of gunshots suddenly rang out.
In the rainforest, even gunshots couldn't travel too far, and the trees made the sound muffled, making it impossible to determine the direction of the gunfire.
Arthur woke up abruptly and instinctively wanted to stand up, but after hesitating for a moment, he quickly crouched down again and whispered to John, "There's a firefight."
John didn't respond. He lay still on the makeshift stretcher made of clothes.
Arthur was suddenly shocked. With a trembling voice, he said, "Bottle Cap, Bottle Cap..."
John still didn't move. Arthur cautiously reached out his left hand and placed it in front of John's nose, but he didn't feel John's breath.
Arthur's heart started to chill, but he still refused to give up. He placed his hand on John's neck and then found that John still had a pulse.
Not dead, as long as he's not dead.
Arthur let out a sigh of relief, and then he saw John open his eyes and stare blankly at him, saying, "Why are you touching me?"
"You... damn it! Don't play dead when you're not!"
Arthur was angry, but John closed his eyes again, weakly saying, "I want to sleep, I have no strength."
Just then, Arthur heard Rubber's voice on the radio.
"I can't see the enemy, I can't find the enemy's exact position!"
"I can't see them either. We can't suppress fire and waste bullets. Captain, what should we do?"
Rubber and George's voices were urgent, but Frank's voice was calm. He said, "Get closer, don't spread out, we need to get closer together!"
Arthur hesitated for a moment. It seemed that the Captain and the other two couldn't use the method of sudden attack to solve the enemy from behind.
Launching a surprise attack was good, but if the enemy was in the dark, the meaning of the surprise attack would be greatly reduced.
Now, both sides were in the dark, both were careful enough, and both couldn't detect each other's positions. This kind of battle was disgusting.
Although it was impossible to determine the range by sound, judging the distance was still possible. From the sound, the distance of the engagement was very close, which meant Rubber's judgment was correct, and the enemy was indeed hidden where he had judged.
Arthur picked up the handgun. After thinking for a moment, he said to John, "Do you know how I'm going to kill the enemy?"
This time, John opened his eyes and, very weakly, asked, "How?"
"I'll rush over and shoot them in the head at close range. That way, I'm sure to kill them."
"Heh, that's really... you're serious!"
Arthur stood up, bent over, and slowly advanced. Although John was almost dead, he still looked incredulously at Arthur's back and said, "You're crazy, hey!"
Ignoring John, Arthur squeezed the earpiece and whispered, "I'm attacking from behind. Be careful. I'm coming!"
The communication channel was quiet. After a moment, Rubber said in a very helpless tone, "I shouldn't have let Mad Dog watch over Bottle Cap by himself. Mad Dog, he... he's crazy!"
Arthur didn't run, he continued to move forward slowly, and then he finally identified a firing position. It was less than twenty meters away from him, and someone was whispering something.
Without accelerating, Arthur just became more cautious. Then, as he was cautiously advancing, he suddenly heard a rustling sound in front of him.
Arthur immediately stopped moving and saw a person in a green military uniform standing up from a pile of grass, looking around in the direction of the gunfire, then quickly crouching back down.
About three meters away, the plants hid the enemy very well, but also blocked the enemy's line of sight. Even though Arthur was at close range, the enemy didn't notice him.
"No one, maybe I heard wrong. They are already engaged in a firefight, there should be someone passing by here, right?"
"The camp said there were only four enemies. I think they can't separate. Let's not move, just wait here."
"What do you think they are? Spies sent by the United States?"
"Is the United States going to fight us? I think they're here to seize territory. Who knows?"
Forward two people started chatting quietly, Arthur listened for a while, and then he decided to take action.
It was impossible to continue sneaking, so Arthur suddenly stood up and rushed out.
When Arthur stood up abruptly, the two people kneeling on the ground hiding in the grass turned around in amazement, their guns also turning backward. However, once Arthur stood up, they wouldn't have a chance to shoot at him.
Almost aiming at the nose of the enemy on the right, Arthur shot and instantly killed him. Then, Arthur grabbed the gun barrel of the remaining enemy with his left hand and directly aimed the gun at the chin of the remaining enemy with his right hand.
"Don't move..."
Arthur wanted to capture one alive for questioning, but the enemy in front of him was fierce and fast in his actions. Or perhaps he simply didn't react to what was happening. After realizing that his gun couldn't be aimed at Arthur, he immediately let go of the rifle and clasped both hands around Arthur's right arm holding the gun.
Before his arm was pushed away, Arthur fired helplessly. The bullet hit the enemy's head from the chin, and after a strange gunshot, blood splattered all over Arthur's face.
Arthur was stunned for a moment, then he holstered the gun with his right hand and picked up an M16 rifle from one of the corpses with both hands.
The rifle was very old, but it was an automatic rifle, which was better than a pistol anyway.
With the rifle in hand, Arthur aimed at the fern plants ahead where the gunfire was coming from and pulled the trigger.
The recoil wasn't very strong. Arthur swept back and forth, emptying the magazine in one breath. Then he threw away the rifle in his hand, picked up another rifle beside him, and fired at an enemy that suddenly appeared from behind a tree to the left.
Bullets flew, and the grass around Arthur began to fall. While Arthur was firing at the tree beside the enemy, both of them began to dodge. Arthur was lying forward on the ground, while the enemy dodged behind the tree.
This battle was chaotic, with gunfire at a distance of only thirty meters. It wasn't a test of marksmanship at all, because anyone who could shoot could hit the target at such a close range. It was a test of eyesight, because every figure was vague and fleeting, and they all flashed by.
If only there were grenades. In jungle warfare, grenades were the most effective weapons.
Arthur looked down at the two bodies beside him. He even searched one of the bodies, but there were no grenades.
Always active in the jungle, yet without the best weapon for jungle warfare, Arthur didn't know if the Gowu organization's guerrilla unit was too poor or too stupid.
Arthur smashed through the bushes and moved sideways a few steps, then he stood up again, not daring to aim carefully before shooting. He just raised the rifle over his head and fired aimlessly, sweeping until the bullets in the rifle were gone.
When he pulled the trigger and no bullets were fired, Arthur suddenly realized that there were no bullets in the gun. Then, he realized with amazement that he had indeed made the mistake that novices often make, which was not letting go of the trigger after the shooting.
The level of military fans was just like this, you couldn't expect too much.
But Arthur felt that he was actually at the same level as the African soldiers who believed in shooting. He couldn't help but despise himself.
A simple question, what if you didn't hit the enemy when you fired?
The simplest two answers: fire again, or get closer and fire again.
Arthur rushed out, abandoning the rifle.
When Arthur realized that he didn't know how to use a rifle, he chose the more familiar pistol and then ended the battle familiarly.
It was a well-known fact that the more afraid you were of death on the battlefield, the faster you would die. When faced with the dilemma of either killing the enemy or being killed by the enemy, it was best to be brave.
Arthur charged straight towards the enemy's position, and when the enemy came out from behind the tree again to observe Arthur's position, he was shocked to see Arthur charging towards him.
This was an unreasonable way of fighting. When the soldier hesitantly aimed his rifle at Arthur, Arthur had already fired two shots in a row.
The enemy couldn't understand this way of fighting even in death.
Arthur charged past the dead enemy, still running forward, bouncing and jumping because he simply didn't know how to advance and shoot at the same time. He just wanted to find the enemy, and then shoot him dead. For him, the battle was that simple.
Arthur heard gunshots and saw someone firing in the grass, then the enemy spotted him and quickly adjusted the gun to aim at him.
With a shot from his hand, Arthur missed. He fired two more shots, still missing, but his enemy only fired one shot, then began frantically reloading his gun, starting to reload in a panic.
Another shot from Arthur, and the fourth shot finally hit the enemy, because he was less than five meters away from his enemy.
If you can't hit, get closer and shoot again. How simple.
Without stopping, Arthur continued to run forward, but now there were no more gunshots, and no one popped out to shoot at him. Arthur felt that he had run too far, so he turned back and ran back, hoping to find the position of the other enemies. Just then, he heard Rubber on the radio, "Mad Dog, where are you, Mad Dog! Where are you!"
Breathless, Arthur said, "I'm... not sure, I killed five people! I'm still looking for the remaining enemies."
"No need to look, there are only six people here. Captain used himself as bait and tried it, there's no one left."
After Rubber finished speaking quickly, he hesitated for a moment and said, "No, maybe you're the bait."
Arthur stopped, panting heavily, looked around, and said, "I can't see you guys, I don't know where I am. Fire a shot so I can determine the direction."
After a little time, Arthur finally reunited with Frank and the others. When Arthur saw the three of them looking complicated, he said seriously, "I said, don't call me Mad Dog anymore. Do you know what 'highlight' means? That's right, it's Arthur Moment. You can call me that from now on."
Rubber scratched his head and said, "I admit this is your highlight. I've never done this in my life, and I never thought I could. I can only say you did it beautifully, Mad Dog."
